Lancashire's Ribble Valley voted for the Tory Nigel Evans in 2001, giving him an 11,000 majority over the Liberal Democrat candidate, with the then Labour candidate in third place.
In 2005, the Labour candidate has just decided that the party isn't for him and has jumped ship to the Liberal Democrats. He says that this is because of Iraq, identity cards, house arrest and the authoritarian streak of the Labour Party.
Amazingly, he's described the Liberal Democrats as 'honest and straightforward,' which doesn't speak volumes for his political knowledge. At least we know that it wasn't about 'self-interest' and must be entirely unconnected with his deselection from his Lancashire county council seat.
He's no Paul Marsden, is he?
